Inner and Outer Considering

We continued discussion of 'likes and dislikes' which extend into the realm of relations with one another. We saw that our likes and dislikes of others, or their particular features and characteristics, determines who we relate to and how we relate.

Gurdjieff introduced a simple rubrik, distinguishing 'inner' consideration from 'outer' consideration. With inner considering our perception of others is a projection of our own self-picture, based on how they make us feel, and how we evaluate them on the basis of our preconceived ideas. With outer considering we begin to see beyond the screen of our own self-projection and with this comes the possibility of seeing what others really need, and the possibility of being of service.

Gurdjieff suggested that "to bear the manifestation of others is a big thing--the last thing for a man".

The effort to persist in our regard of others, even in the face of manifestations that are unpleasant to us, is itself a fulcrum of work on ourselves. The effort of impartiality leads to a possible liberation from the slavery of self-involvement. In this way we may come to be able to serve, and even to be able to love.

We are pausing together during the day to collect ourselves and reconnect with the six points of the morning exercise. This is a brief pause of 6 breaths (or longer, if you wish). These pauses are appointments we intend to keep, at 11am, noon, and 1pm. I am appreciating connecting with you all at these times.
