Polarities
The theme we are working with is observation of the working of polarities in the emotional center -- like and dislike. The emotions are either attracted or repelled, depending on whether "I like" or "I dislike" the object at hand. As a result our lives follow a narrow and predictable track guided by automatic attractions and aversions to objects, experiences, ideas, influences, people, situations, etc.
Our theme is to observe the pull of our likes and dislikes, to notice when the "horse" of our emotions pulls the conveyance of our being toward things or pushes them away.
We know that a being effort is needed for observation to enter so look for opportunities "to like what it dislikes". Voluntarily enter or stay in a situation that is uncomfortable. Eat food that one has been served even if you don't care for it. Take a call or stop and chat with someone you would ordinarily cross the street to avoid. Head out onto the dance floor even though you don't like dancing. The creative possibilities are endless. Conversely these could include voluntarily sacrificing experiences we like.
This theme is central to our work because even a momentary liberation from the dyad of likes and dislikes can open a way for the entry of higher impulses like love, compassion, and a genuine feeling of wish for the wellbeing of others and ourselves.
We continue work with the Six Point Exercise as our morning exercise. Together with a preparation of relaxation and collected state, try to practice this for some time each day, ideally in the morning.
